An Interesting Path – The Origin of Choir Nation

Todd GreenNews

Hello! Murray Foster of Choir Nation here. Thanks for visiting the Choir Nation website. Choir Nation is a new venture that my partners and I are very excited about – let me tell you a little bit about how it all came to be…

Around 6 months ago I was contacted by Todd Green. Todd was and is a marketing prof at Brock, and a music fanatic – he was doing a research project on the current state of the music industry and wanted my opinion. He interviewed me, and we hit it off. A few days later he invited me to participate in a music symposium he was hosting, and after that he asked me if I had any business ideas kicking around that I’d like to bounce off his marketing students, as a learning opportunity for them and an ideas generator for me.

I presented a concept in its early stages called Toronto Music Day – basically a series of concerts around Toronto that would generate a pool of funds to help musicians. It was a noble idea, but I was sensing that it wasn’t viable as a business. After I presented Toronto Music Day to the students, Todd mentioned that he would like to get together to explore some other ideas.

As a marketing expert, Todd knew that companies are investing a lot of time and money into employee engagement, team-building and work-life balance. We both realized immediately that there was a missing element to these team-building and employee engagement activities: music. Within half an hour we had the idea of ‘corporate choirs’ – groups of employees forming choirs, working with notable Canadian musicians and performing both original and cover versions in concert in front of colleagues, friends and family members. Thus was born was the kernel of Choir Nation.

As Choir Nation has evolved from an idea to an actual company, Todd and I have remained just as excited about it.

So now that everything is in place, the only thing left to say is: let the singing begin!

Cheers,

Murray Foster, Choir Nation CEO.
